What is Reiki?

Many people have never heard of Reiki and I am regularly asked to explain it. There is a lot of information on the internet, but there can be a tendency to make it seem complicated and mystical. I prefer to explain in this manner. First, it is a hands-on practice that uses energy to relieve stress and restore balance. Most likely you have been taught that all matter consists of molecules. Molecules are bonded groups of atoms. Now, please visualize an atom. What do you see? A solid lump of mass? Or a few particles held in orbit around a nucleus? Atoms are not solid, they are energy. Next notice the chair you are sitting on. The chair seems to be solid but it’s really just energy. Its molecules are held in a different pattern than the molecules in a glass of water. But all the different types of molecules are made of atoms. So everything, including the air we breathe, the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the structure we live in, and the water we drink….all are made of atoms. All of it, every single bit, is energy.

So when people talk about universal energy it its quite easy to understand that it is everywhere, all the time. Now go one step further and think of a living being. Yes, our cells are made of molecules and therefore atoms, but now there is also a conscious life force energy as well. Why do our cells do what they do? What keeps all of our wonderful anatomy functioning? Energy. So, being that energy is everywhere around us, in us, and of us, it should not be difficult to accept that energy is always available to us. Reiki is a technique that uses this universally available energy to balance out the body’s energy allowing our systems and organs to do their jobs more effectively. It is extremely relaxing. Many of our body’s processes rely on electrical impulses or ionic charges to carry out their function. If the energy of a tense muscle becomes balanced, it no longer provokes the message to ‘contract’ and tension is effortlessly erased at the source. The best way to experience what it is, would be to have a Reiki practitioner place their hands on your hand or a sore joint. It feels like a warm compress that melts the tension away. Almost everyone has used heat to relieve pain before.

Anyone can learn Reiki. Many people get the first level attunement for the purpose of self-healing. No special talent is required, but some people just seem to have an affinity for doing this work and pursue more training and levels. It is not necessary to believe in Reiki for it to work. It promotes healing and helps with any type of complaint. Reiki will not interfere with any medical treatment, and in fact aids recovery.

Obviously, my explanation is not meant to be a scientific definition. It is merely a series of illustrations that I use to relate this technique to things my clients already understand. Please give it a try and see what you think. I am very sure you will thoroughly enjoy the experience and the results.
